WILL WE SOMEDAY BE ABLE TO CONTROL OUR AGING?
It is possible that as we learn more about the processes that control aging, we might be able to regulate this process in a fashion that also enables physical and mental longevity. Certainly, maintaining general lifestyle practices, such as exercising and avoiding smoking and overeating will be effective. However, it also seems plausible, if not likely, that using drugs that affect key metabolic pathways such as the mTOR and AMPK pathways, and even manipulating the microbiome through diet and probiotics, might someday be effective retardants of aging. In fact, trials to test metformin, the AMPK activator for reducing aging are presently underway.
