WHAT IS TZANCK SMEAR TEST?

The Tzanck smear is a rapid and sensitive inexpensive staining technique that can confirm the presence of herpes simplex virus or varicellazoster virus by examination of the morphology of cells present in fluid from the vesicles. Both viruses contain multinucleated giant cells, which can be seen under a microscope with this staining technique. The Tzanck smear cannot differentiate the type of virus present; thus, viral culture should also be performed.
