WHAT IS THE FOLLICLE-STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH, FOLLITROPIN) TEST?
When released from the anterior pituitary gland, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in women promotes maturation of the ovarian follicle, which produces estrogen. As levels of estrogen rise, luteinizing hormones are produced. Together, FSH and luteinizing hormone induce ovulation. In men, FSH produces spermatogenesis and luteinizing hormone stimulates the secretion of androgens. This test aids in the differential diagnosis of hypogonadism, infertility, menstrual disorders, and precocious puberty.
