WHAT IS RED BLOOD CELL MASS TEST?

Red blood cell mass is a direct measurement of the total number of red blood cells in the systemic circulation and is expressed in relation to body weight as millilitres per kilogram (mL/kg). Red blood cell mass reflects the equilibrium between the rate that the bone marrow produces and releases erythrocytes and the rate of peripheral erythrocyte destruction. This test assists in the differential diagnosis of absolute and relative polycythemia, anaemia, erythrocytosis, and Gaisböck’s disease.
