WHAT IS POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE PREPARATION (KOH WET MOUNT) TEST?

Fungi are slow-growing, eukaryotic organisms that can grow on living and nonliving organic materials and are subdivided into yeasts and moulds. Only a few fungi species infect humans. The KOH preparation allows for direct microscopic examination of skin, nail, hair, sputum, abscess exudate, or biopsy tissue for the presence of fungal fragments. A 10%-20% KOH solution mixed with the specimen clears away debris, making visualization of mycelial filaments, hyphae, spores, spherules, and budding yeast cells possible under a low-power microscope.
