WHAT IS GLOMERULAR BASEMENT MEMBRANE ANTIBODY TEST?

Antibodies specific for the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) bind to specific antigens, causing an immune response leading to various anti-GBM diseases. This test identifies the presence of circulating GBM antibodies and is positive in 87% of clients with anti-GBM–associated Goodpasture’s syndrome and 60% of clients with anti-GBM–associated glomerulonephritis. Goodpasture’s syndrome is a rare disease characterised by necrotising glomerulonephritis and hemorrhagic pneumonitis, which may result in renal failure and death.
