WHAT IS FIBRINOGEN BREAKDOWN PRODUCTS (FIBRIN DEGRADATION PRODUCTS, FDP) TEST?
Seven split products result from splitting fibrin or fibrinogen as a result of an attack by plasmin during the dissolution of fibrin clots. These split products, labelled A, B, C, D, E, X, and Y, indicate recent clotting activity. Greatly increased amounts interfere with hemostatic plug formation and indicate abnormal amounts of fibrinolysis. Levels >40 mg/mL are highly suggestive of disseminated intravascular coagulation.
