Malignant cells demonstrate greater proliferation than normal cells and tend to have disordered cellular division whereby aneuploid DNA is present in individual cells. This abnormality increases with the degree of malignancy. Clinical studies indicate that the proportion of proliferating cells in a breast tumour biopsy specimen and the degree of aneuploidy have prognostic significance for breast cancer. Longer disease-free periods after treatment tend to occur in individuals whose tumour has lower degrees of proliferation and fewer aneuploid cells.
