WHAT IS CYSTINE (QUALITATIVE) TEST?

Cystine is an amino acid normally absent or present in only low amounts in the urine. In conditions causing cystinuria >300 mg/day, smooth, waxy cystine stones form in the kidneys and may be passed into the urine. Positive qualitative results should be followed by a 24-hour collection for cystine measurement because random samples may demonstrate peaks of cystine excretion in the urine.
