WHAT IS CHLORIDE (SERUM) TEST?
Chloride, a hydrochloric acid salt, is the most abundant body anion in the extracellular fluid. It functions in counterbalancing cations such as sodium and also acts as a buffer during oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange in red blood cells. Chloride also aids in digestion, osmotic pressure, and water balance. It is measured in serum, along with other electrolytes, to evaluate electrolyte acid-base balance.
