WHAT IS CATHEPSIN D TEST?

Cathepsin D is an independent prognostic factor associated with high risk for metastasis in breast cancer. It is an estrogen-inducible lysosomal protease that is believed to have a role in tumour invasion and metastasis. The overexpression of cathepsin D is associated with visceral and increased soft-tissue metastases and decreased overall survival. Current thought is that cathepsin D is more of a marker of increased metabolism rather than a specific marker for cancer.
