WHAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) TEST?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a chemical asphyxiant found in the fumes of automobile exhaust, improperly functioning furnaces, and defective gas-burning appliances. When inhaled, it combines with the haemoglobin in the red blood cells with an affinity 200 times greater than oxygen. This produces a haemoglobin derivative, carboxyhemoglobin, that is unable to transport or release oxygen throughout the body, resulting in hypoxia. CO induces toxicity according to the level and duration of exposure.
