WHAT IS ANDROSTENEDIONE TEST?
A metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) produced in the ovaries and the adrenal gland that is converted to testosterone in peripheral tissues. Peak levels occur in the early morning and low levels in the late afternoon. After puberty, levels rise and peak around 20 years of age. The elevation is one of several causes of female hirsutism, which is characterised by a male hair-growth pattern. Very elevated levels are suggestive of the presence of a virilizing tumour.
