TriCor

TriCor

Properties

This medicine contains fenofibrate as active ingredient; it belongs to the class of lipid-lowering drugs. These drugs reduce the levels of fats in the blood by altering the way in which the liver converts fatty acids in the blood into different types of lipids. Fibrates can reduce the level of both cholesterol and triglycerides in the  blood.

For maximum benefit, these drugs are used in conjunction with a low-fat diet and a reduction in other risk factors such as obesity and smoking. The choice of drug depends on the type of lipid causing problems, so a full medical history, examination, and laboratory analysis of blood samples are needed before drug treatment is prescribed.

The drug reduces the risk of heart attack or other cardiac event in people with high triglyceride levels and low levels of HDL cholesterol, especially among people with diabetes. The evidence for this benefit is not as strong as it is for the statin drugs.
