Properties

This medicine contains lovastatin as active ingredient. It belongs to the class of medicines called statines (cholesterol-lowering medicines). The drug works by increasing “good” cholesterol (HDL), and also slowing the progression of atherosclerosis in adults with high cholesterol, as part of a treatment plan to lower cholesterol to goal.

This medicine works by reducing cholesterol in two ways:

•   blocking an enzyme in the liver causing the liver to make less cholesterol;

•    increasing the uptake and breakdown by the liver of cholesterol already in the blood.

Prescribed for

The medicine is prescribed for:

•   Treatment of high blood levels of cholesterol

•   Treatment for high blood levels of triglycerides

•   Prevention of heart attacks

•   Prevention of strokes

The medicine is prescribed only if diet, exercise, and weight loss fail to lower your cholesterol level. This medicine is meant to supplement, not replace, these lifestyle changes. To get the full benefit of this drug, you need to stick to the diet and exercise program prescribed by your doctor. The safety and effectiveness of this medicine have not been established in children.

Before using this medicine

Before you use this medicine check with your doctor, or pharmacist:

•   if you ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this drug

•    if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant while using this medicine

•   if you have had a stroke

•   if you have long-term kidney problems

•   if you have long-term liver problems

•   if you are breast-feeding an infant

•   if you have a history of muscle pain or weakness

•   if you are drinking more than 2 glasses of alcohol daily

•   if you have thyroid problems

Cautions and Warnings

Tell your health care professional about all medicines you take or plan to take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Do not use this medicine for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give this medicine to other people, even if they have the same medical condition you have. It may harm them.

Wait at least 2 hours after taking this drug to take an antacid that contains a combination of aluminum and magnesium hydroxide.

Treatment

This medication is used for treatment of disorders of heart and/or blood vessels.

Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care professional. Do not change your dose or stop this medication without talking to your health care professional, even if you are feeling well.

•    Your health care professional may to blood tests to check your cholesterol before and during treatment with this drug. Your dose of this medicine may be changed based on these blood test results.

•    Your health care professional may start you on a cholesterol-lowering diet before giving you this medicine. Stay on this diet when you take this drug.

Usual dosage

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may  prescribe a different regimen.

The usual dose for adults is 10-80 mg a day. Tablets should be taken with liquid. Take the medicine at the same times each day.

Follow your doctor’s instructions if this medicine was prescribed. If   you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, do not take 2 doses of this medicine within 12 hours of each other.

Follow the manufacturer’s package directions if you are treating  yourself.

Side effects

Along with the needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Call your health care professional tight away if you experience:

•   Unexplained muscle pain

•   Tenderness

•   Weakness

•   Fever

•   Headache

•   Abdominal pain

•   Nausea

•   Extreme muscle tension

•   Coughing

•   Bronchitis

•   Tingling in hands and feet

•   Vomiting

•   Diarrhea

•   Constipation

•   Upset stomach

Overdose

If you take too much of this medicine or overdose, call your health care professional or Poison Control Center right away or go to the nearest emergency room.

Interactions

Some medicines may interact with this drug, causing side effects. It is particularly important to tell your health care professional if you are taking or planning to take medicines for:

•   Your immune system

•   Cholesterol/triglycerides

•   Blood thinning

•   HIV/AIDS

•   Preventing pregnancy

Driving and hazardous work

Do not drive a car until you learn how this medicine affects you. Do not work around dangerous machinery. Do not climb ladders or work in high places. Danger increases if you drink alcohol or take medicine affecting alertness and reflexes.

Storage

Tablets should be stored at in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place; store away from heat and direct light. Keep out of reach of children, since this medicine may be dangerous in children.
