This medicine contains as active ingredient torsemide, a short-acting loop diuretic, used to treat fluid retention (edema) caused by heart failure, and certain lung, liver, and kidney disorders. De drug increases the elimination of sodium, potassium and water from the body. The decreased body fluid reduced blood pressure.
Diuretics are most commonly used in the treatment of high blood pressure. By removing a larger amount of water than usual from the bloodstream, the kidneys reduce the total volume of blood circulating. The drop in volume causes a reduction of the pressure within the blood vessels.
Diuretics are also widely used to treat heart failure in which the heart’s pumping mechanism has become weak. In the treatment of this disorder, they remove fluid that has accumulated in the tissues and lungs. The resulting drop in blood volume reduces the work of the heart.
The drug is prescribed for:
• Treatment of high blood pressure.
• Treatment of fluid retention, particularly in case of heart failure
• Treatment of certain diseases of the lung, liver, and kidney.
Cautions and Warnings
Do not take loop diuretics if you are allergic or sensitive to any of their ingredients. People allergic to sulfa drugs may also be allergic to a loop diuretic.
Excessive use of loop diuretics results in dehydration or reduction in blood volume, and may cause circulatory collapse or other related problems particularly in older adults.
Ringing or buzzing in the ears, deafness, fainting, and a sensation of fullness in the ears can occur with these drugs. Hearing usually returns within 24 hours, but some loss may be permanent.
